Canada’s 19U men and women earn the bronze at 2014 Junior Pan American Water Polo Championships

The Canadian 19 and under men and women’s national teams both walked away with bronze medals, on July 15, at the conclusion of the 2014 UANA Junior Pan American Water Polo Championships, in Riverside, California.

The women rebounded from a tough loss to Brazil, 7-6, in the semi-finals on Monday and dominated the bronze medal game, which they ultimately won 23-2 against the national team of Puerto Rico. Eight players contributed to the Canadian tally. Emma Wright, of Lindsay, ON, led the charge for Canada with six goals in the game. Kyra Christmas, from Calgary, AB, registered four points while Ontarian Sarah Myers and Quebecers Axelle Crevier and Kelly Matthews each had three. Team captain Kindred Paul scored twice during the match with Hayley McKelvey and Amy Yule rounding out the count with single goals for Canada. Goalie Kelsey Jensen, from Saskatchewan, did a solid job in front of the Canadian net.

On the men’s side, Canada snatched the bronze medal from their Argentinian opponents with an 11-8 victory. The Canadian offense was driven by Sean Spooner, from British Columbia, with four goals in the game. Devin O'Donnell, Euan Scoffield and Matt Halajian each scored twice and Dusan Boskovic recorded a single goal. Yorek Hurrelmann was in goal for Canada and made four key saves to protect his team’s advantage.

The gold medals of the tournament were claimed by the American teams and Brazil earned the silver. The U.S.A. beat their South American opponent 11-6 in the women’s final and 10-9 in the men’s ultimate matchup.

“Today was a good game for us,” said the Canadian men’s team captain, Harrison Watt, of DDO, QC. “Even though we were not playing for the gold medal, we showed we still cared for the tournament. Our goal was to qualify for the World Championships, so we did that,” he said.

By accessing the semi-finals, both the Canadian men’s and women’s squads have indeed qualified for next summer’s FINA World Junior (20U) Water Polo Championships, to be held in Kazakhstan.

To further prepare for the upcoming challenges, six players present in California (Euan Scoffield, Sean Spooner, Sever Topan, Giordano Marconato, Simon Wu and Gaelan Patterson) are now set to join the 18 and under team training in Kamloops, BC, in preparation for the 18U World Championships presented in Istanbul, Turkey, this August.
