Weekly notes (Jan. 4-11, 2016): Undefeated teams keep rolling in 2016

The calendar has flipped to 2016 and the top teams in the NCL have picked up right where they left off after the holiday break. 13 games were played over this past weekend and right across the country unbeaten teams continued to extend their perfect seasons.

Three of those perfect seasons are being put forward by teams representing CAMO. The 16U Girls’ squad defeated their local rivals Dollard and St-Lambert in a pair of convincing victories, 15-8 and 18-10, respectively. The wins push the girls’ record to 8-0 and 6 points clear of 2nd place Capital Wave and St-Lambert.

The older 19U CAMO women’s squad is also currently running the table, and two wins on Sunday have put the defending national champions at 6-0. Sunday morning CAMO was able to handle their rivals from DDO 18-5 before hitting the road to play an evening game in Gatineau against Capital Wave. CAMO was able to shake off any fatigue they might have been feeling from the long day and record a 12-5 win.

The third undefeated CAMO squad is the 19U Men who are now 6-0 after beating a strong DDO Black squad 25-15 in Cote Saint-Luc. All three CAMO squads are extremely well positioned to qualify for the 1-2 playoff game and the extra chance it presents to qualify for the National Championships.

The 4th undefeated team from the Montreal area is the 16U DDO Black squad, who were able to flip the script on their CAMO rivals. The early Saturday morning game at Claude Robillard was seen by many as the possible game of the week and for it certainly meet expectations early on. For the first two thirds of the game Dollard could not shake CAMO loose. Every time Dollard would get a three, four, five goal lead, the home side would pull themselves back. Half way through the 3rd quarter, CAMO pulled within one at 13-12 and had designs on pulling the upset. The next few minutes saw several chances for the equalizer go by the wayside and then Dollard put the game away with a six goal run. Final score was DDO 21, CAMO 15. DDO Black now sits at 7-0 and six points clear at the top of the eastern conference.

The 5th and final undefeated team in action on the weekend was across the country in Langley BC where Pacific Storm was taking on Fraser Valley. Storm’s 19U women were 5-0 heading into the game but the last meeting between the two teams was a nail biting one goal affair. The same drama would not take place on this occasion as Storm used a 5-1 first quarter to put Fraser Valley in an early hole they could not dig out. The final score was 14-7 and Storm now has a 9 point lead in the western conference.

The continued strong runs by the undefeated teams in the NCL may be discouraging for some of the other teams but one other result from the weekend demonstrates just how much things can change over the long NCL season. The game in question was a 13-13 tie between Fraser Valley and Pacific Storm in a 19U men’s game. 2 months ago, those same two teams played and that game was a 14 goal victory for Pacific Storm. As the old saying goes, it’s now how you start, it’s how you finish, and with 4 months to go in the regular season, it’s anybody’s guess what the standings will look like at the finish line.

This week in the NCL (January 11-17, 2016)

Two huge 16U events this week really get the NCL back into high gear after the holiday break. All of the 16U teams in the country will be in action as both Calgary and Gatineau play host to a conference weekend. A total of 58 games will be played over four days so if you’re in the area, come on out for some great water polo; and if you’re not in the area, keep a look-out for the livestreaming links.

Please see the NCL schedule for exact times and locations.
