FINA Junior Men’s World Championships – Day 1: Canada's Men Open with a Win on Day One of Round Robin Action

(Belgrade, Serbia, August 5 2017) – The Canadian Men opened their tournament with an 11-7 win over Egypt at the 2017 FINA Junior Men’s World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. Both teams were looking to start off the tournament with a victory in Group D, going back and forth throughout the game. In the end, Canada managed to take advantage and earned an important win.

Reuel D’Souza opened the score for Canada in the first quarter. Despite many attempts the Canadians were unable to extend their lead heading into the second quarter.

D’Souza netted his second and third of the night in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Felix Poliseno fired one from the right side to extend Canada’s lead to 4-0. Egypt would respond with one, two minutes later. Poliseno then scored his second on the Canadian power play to give his team a 5-1 lead before the end of the half.

Egypt came back stronger in the second half, capitalizing on their opportunities. D’Souza would score his fourth of the night, just to see Egypt answer back with a goal to put the score at 6-3. Jérémie Côté also netted one for Canada in the third. Canada was up 7-4 heading into the final quarter.

Both teams exchanged goals at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Egyptians scored in the first 20 seconds, trailing now by two goals (5-7) with almost a quarter to play. Aria Soleimani and Mark Spooner each scored one for Canada, before Egypt answered back with one (9-6). Soleimani and Poliseno would score the last two Canadian goals to confirm the victory (11-7).

“The most important thing for us was to get the win. We did it in the end, but we can definitely play better water polo and we will have to for our following games. It’s always good to break the ice with a win, it makes the team feel good and confident” said Jérémie Blanchard, men’s national team.

The Canadian Men will play their second game of the round robin, August 7 vs South Africa at 10:20 am Local/ 4:20 am ET.
