Belgrade Day 5: Canada falls to Hungary at the FINA Junior World Championships

(Belgrade, Serbia, August 9) – The Canadian 20U Men’s National team fell to Hungary 6-17 in their last group game at the 2017 FINA Junior World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. The Hungarian team came out strong in the first half taking a comfortable 10-0 lead. However, Canada stepped up its game in the second half, but it was too late for the red and white.

The Hungarians added three more goals at the beginning of the second half to accentuate their lead. Felix Poliseno opened the score for Canada in the third quarter. Benjamin Lemay-Lavoie and Jérémie Blanchard found the back of the net to end a 3-3 third quarter.

Trailing by 10 goals entering the final quarter, Canada looked to improve and finish the game on a positive note. The Hungarian squad would score two in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, but Poliseno answered back with his second of the night. Both teams exchanged goals in the final minutes of the game, Reuel D’Souza and Jérémie Côté both scored for Canada, making it 6-7 in the second half. In the end, Hungary were too far ahead to orchestrate the comeback. With this 17-6 win, the Hungarians confirm their first place finish in Group D.

“First half, we played slow and not up to our standards. Second half, we collectively improved our game and we were able to finish much better” said Aria Soleimani of the 20U Men’s National Team.

The Canadian men finish in third place of Group D with a 2-2-0 record. Canada will take on the United States tomorrow at 4:40 pm local / 10:40 am ET in the crossover game for a place in the quarterfinals. Live stream is available via the Water Polo Serbia Facebook page.
