FINA World League Super Final – Day 2: Canada falls to the United States

(June 5, 2019 – Budapest, Hungary) – The Canadians fell to the United States in their second match at the FINA World League Super Final in Budapest, Hungary. A six-goal run by the Americans in the first quarter made it difficult for the Canadian women to come back into the game. Despite battling hard in the next three quarters, Canada was unable to overcome the early advantage, and the US recorded the 15-4 win.

The United States capitalized on every opportunity in the first quarter, taking a 6-0 lead. The Canadian Women’s team settled down a bit the opening minutes of the second quarter, and the defence stepped up to limit the opportunities for the Americans. Shae Fournier found the back of the net twice on Canadian power plays to put Canada on the scoreboard before halftime (9-2).

The Canadian women’s team needed to create something on offence in the second half. Monika Eggens led the way for Canada in the third quarter, tallying two goals to bring the score to 13-4 heading into the final quarter. The Canadians played solid defence in the fourth quarter, limiting the American squad to only two goals. However, the early run by the Americans was just too much to overcome, and the US earned the 15-4 win.
