Canadian women finish 9th after a win against Kazakhstan

(Gwangju, South Korea – July 24, 2019) – The Canadian women defeated Kazakhstan 24-7 to finish ninth at the 2019 FINA World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea. The two nations exchanged goals in the opening minutes of the game, but Canada slowly built up its lead to show a 7-3 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Canucks stuck to their game plan and never looked back to record a 24-7 victory.

Emma Wright and Joelle Bekhazi each tallied a hat-trick in the first quarter to help Canada jump to a 7-3 lead. The Canadian women continued to push in the second quarter; Bekhazi netted her fourth and fifth goals on counter-attacks to help her team take a 12-4 advantage at halftime.

Canada added four more goals in the third quarter, showing a 16-5 lead heading into the final period. Krystina Alogbo completed her hat-trick early in the fourth quarter while Kelly McKee scored four consecutive goals to help the Canadians take a 23-7 lead. Emma Wright converted a late penalty shot to bring her total to five and confirm the 24-7 victory.

“We came into this game looking to really push the counter-attack, press hard and prepare for the games coming up in Lima. Even though we did not accomplish our ultimate goal here, we wanted to make sure to leave on a strong note. I’m very proud of our team and how we kept fighting through all the adversity and the hard defeats,” said Joelle Bekhazi.

The Canadian women’s team will have a few days off before traveling to Lima for the 2019 Pan American Games. Canada’s tournament will start Sunday, August 4, 2019. The Canadian women will face Cuba at 9:30 am (local) while the Canadian men will play Puerto Rico at 18:00 (local) (subject to change).
