(Lima, Peru – August 9, 2010) –  In another hard-fought battle, the Canadian men edged Brazil 8-7 in the semi-final to advance to the Gold Medal and Olympic qualification match.

The Canadian men came out firing in the opening minutes of the game. Reuel D’Souza, Matt Halajian and Jérémie Côté each tallied one to help Canada take a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period. In a defensive second quarter, Canada limited the opportunities for the Brazilians to keep the 3-1 advantage at halftime. Gaelan Patterson beat the goalkeeper on the first possession of the second half to extend the Canadian lead to 4-1. The Brazilians answered back with three consecutive goals to even the score 4-4 with one quarter to play.

The fourth quarter was an absolute thriller with each team answering the opponents’ efforts. Nicolas Constantin-Bicari and Jérémie Côté each scored one to give Canada the lead in the final quarter, but Brazil found the equalizer twice to show a 6-6 tie at 5:20. The Brazilian squad took the lead for the first time in the match at 2:22 of the fourth, but Canada’s Aleksa Gardijan fired a shot from outside to tie the score 7-7. With less than a minute to play, Constantin-Bicari won his battle in front of the net and tallied his second of the match to give Canada the edge. The Canadian defence stepped up and stopped the last Brazilian attempt to record the 8-7 win and advance to the Gold Medal game.

“We know coming into this match that Brazil was a close competitor of ours and that it was going to be a fight; ups and downs, winning, losing and tied, but we pushed through the whole 32 minutes and I am happy we were able to get the win in the end. Tomorrow, it will be Canada vs USA for the gold medal game, it’s obviously going to be a close battle, but we know what we need to do to get the win.” mentioned Gaelan Patterson of the Men’s National Team.

The Men’s gold medal match between Canada and the United States is scheduled for tomorrow, August 10, at 19:30 Local time / 20:30 pm Eastern time. No live streaming available.
