Funchal 2019: Canada finishes in tenth place after loss to Australia

(Funchal, Madeira – September 14, 2019) – The Canadian women had to settle for 10th place after a 14-5 loss to Australia at the 2019 FINA Junior Women's Water Polo Championships in Funchal, Madeira.

The Aussies took the lead early in the game showing a 2-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Australia added three more goals in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Blaire McDowell and Verica Bakoc answered back on the power play to bring Canada within three goals (5-2). Australia's Abby Andrews tallied one with 0:05 on the clock to help her team regain a four-goal lead at halftime.

Bakoc netted her second of the game in the opening minute of the third quarter, but a four-goal sequence helped the Aussies take a 10-3 lead. Bakoc and McDowell each tallied one in the fourth quarter while Australia added four goals to confirm the 14-5 win.

"Today was our strongest team effort in the pool. We coordinated on defense and had movement on offense to create opportunities for each other. In the second half, we lost some focus and were mostly caught on the counter-attack. Our team could compete with the top teams in the world. Every game we were able to up our intensity and fix previous mistakes. Unfortunately, we were inconsistent throughout most games and couldn't develop a rhythm. It was cool to be able to play our last game against a solid team like Australia and have some good moments," said Blaire McDowell.

"This was the last junior tournament for most of the girls on this team, but we are looking forward to playing each other in the NCAA. I think that new tactics implemented by Coach Cyril and Michel proved successful and could be used by future Canadian national teams," she added.

The Canadian women's team finish in tenth place at the 2019 FINA Junior World Championships. The medal round games will be played tomorrow; you can follow the action on FINA TV .
