On October 18, 2017, Water Polo Canada officially signed the pledge of the Responsible Coaching Movement (RCM). This movement which is coordinated by the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport was created to help ensure the protection of athletes and coaches. Water Polo Canada pledges to implement policies and practices that focus on RCM's Phase 1.

For more information on the program, please visit the RCM website.

The three steps of Phase 1 that Water Polo Canada has committed to implementing are:

Rule of Two

The Rule of Two states that there will always be two screened and NCCP trained or certified coaches with an athlete, especially a minor athlete, when in a potentially vulnerable situation.” - Coaching Association of Canada.

Background Screening

Water Polo Canada commits to continue having all of their national coaches receive background screenings. Also all National Championship League coaches will have to provide a valid background screening which includes criminal records checks as well as reference checks.

Respect and Ethics Training

All coaches must take the Make Ethical Decisions module from the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). This module will help coaches be able to identify the legal, ethical, and moral implications of difficult situations that present themselves. Coaches and WPC management staff must also take the Activity Leader/Coach Program from Respect in Sport. This online training will educate coaches and staff on t he prevention of abuse, bullying and harassment and building a culture of respect as well as becoming better role models.
