Shae La Roche

Shae La Roche started playing water polo in 2007, at the age of 15, when she joined a team at her school. Before her first practice, she thought the swimsuit was ugly and the sport strange, but once she started, she quickly fell in love with water polo for the feeling of being in the water, which she always loved, the team dynamic as well as the fast-paced action.

Shae had dreamt of competing in the Olympics since the first time she saw the sport on television. She was also inspired by Waneek Horn-Miller, seeing her on the cover of a magazine ahead of the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Her dream came true when she made the Canadian Women’s National Water Polo Team roster for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

During her athletic career as a position 4-5 attacker, she has represented the Winnipeg Bushido and Laval clubs, won gold medals in 2008 and 2010 at the Junior Pan American Championships, silver at the Toronto 2015 and Lima 2019 Pan American Games as well as at the 2017 FINA World League Super Final. She was also a member of the teams that earned fourth place at the 2021 FINA World League Super Final, and the 2009 and 2013 Summer Universiades, as well as the team that finished sixth at the 2009 FINA World Junior Championships.

She was given a silver horseshoe by her grandmother which has served as her good luck charm throughout her career.

Shae La Roche represented Indiana University where she graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in French as well as in Psychology. While in the United States, she became one of only five players in the NCAA’s history to score 300 goals or more. She also leads Indiana University in assists (154) and is second in steals (306).

Subsequently, she graduated in Youth Work from Concordia University in 2018 and is currently completing a certificate at the Smith School of Business.

In the year leading up to the 2024 Paris Olympics, she underwent two different surgeries, one on her shoulder and one on her knee, which could have ended her career. However, through her perseverance and hard work, she returned in time for the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Qatar.

Following her athletic career, she would like to take time to travel with her husband and pursue her passion of renovating homes.
