Water Polo Canada selects women’s team for July’s World Championships

Water Polo Canada has announced its women’s team roster for the upcoming FINA World Championships to be held in Barcelona, Spain, from July 19 to August 4, 2013.

The group of thirteen (13) athletes includes sole Olympian Christine Robinson (Athens 2004) and 9 other returning members of the 2011 World Championship team from Shanghai. 3 athletes are also making their first appearance at a World Championship, including 16-year-old sharpshooter Emma Wright, from Lindsay, Ontario.

The women have been training in Montreal under the direction of Head Coach Guy Baker and will be travelling at the end of June to join final training camps in Hungary and the Netherlands before heading to Barcelona.

"We have had a lot of work to do since the conclusion of the FINA Super Final on June 6,” said Baker. “The competition provided us with some valuable information and we are starting to put together some of the pieces." Canada lost its six games during the event held in Beijing, China but managed to end four games with a one-point difference, including matchups against London 2012 gold and silver medalists, the U.S. and Spain.

The following thirteen athletes have been selected for the 2013 FINA World Aquatic Championships:

High Performance Director:     Pat Oaten
Head Coach:                         Guy Baker
Assistant Coaches:               Joanne Begin, Kim Everist and Justin Oliveira
Manager:                              Laurence Melançon
