Canada advances to the semifinals at the FINA Women World League Super Final

Jun. 17, 2021

Canada advanced to the semifinals at the FINA Women World League Super Final after beating Kazakhstan 11-3 this morning in Athens, Greece.

After being perfect in the preliminary round, winning all three of its matches, Canada was facing Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals. It was a game that Canada dominated but with a few lapses in its play. “We had a really strong start going up 5-0 in the first quarter. Through the rest of the game, we kept control and had good team play. We were getting good opportunities but struggled to put them away. This is something we need to focus on in the upcoming games” mentioned Joelle Bekhazi.

Canada did slow down offensively in the third and fourth quarter but it did not give many scoring opportunities. “Defensively we stuck to our system and stayed calm and focused. We had a great performance in the net by our goaltenders. I am proud of what we have accomplished so far but there is still more to improve and more to come from our team,” also said Joelle Bekhazi.

Hayley Mckevley and Joelle Bekhazi were the best goal scorers during the game with three goals each. Amanda Amorosa (1), Elyse Lemay-Lavoie (1), Axelle Crevier (1), Emma Wright (1) also scored.

Hayley Mckevley was named player of the game.

Canada will play Hungary in the semifinals tomorrow at 13h15 ET. Both teams played against each other in a tightly disputed preliminary round match that saw the Canadian women win 13-12.
